On 26 January 1967, Condon was reported in the Elmira, New York, Star-Gazette as stating at a American Chemical Society meeting the previous day that he was inclined to recommend that the government get out of the UFO “business”, but added with a smile that he was not supposed to reach that conclusion yet.
